The Shortest Chess Game World Record
The shortest chess world record ever recorded in a mastery game lasted for a mere three moves. In the game that resulted in this record it was decided based on the position on the board and not other reasons like forfeit or protest. However in amateur games there have been records which have even taken lesser moves with quite a number lasting only two moves.
There have been several games which have been forfeited and as such they can also be referred to as games won without making any moves. One such game which resulted in a loss was during the 1972 world chess championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky in which Fischer defaulted in the match.
More recently some new rules have been used to decide some matches. For instance in 2009 a rule which stipulates that a player who arrives late for a match forfeits the match, was used in the Chinese Chess Championships to forfeit Hou Yifan who arrived about five seconds late for the start of a round. In the same year a similar rule which stipulates that if a player’s cellphone makes any sound s/he forfeits the game was used to forfeit Alexander Delchev in a game between him and Stuart Conquest in the European Chess Championships.
